Overview

In this unit you will build on and extend upon your knowledge and skills that have been gained from previous studies. The aim of this unit is to develop advanced knowledge and practice skills when caring for patients with a variety of cardiovascular conditions. You will learn about evidence-based management of acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions. This will include nursing care in relation to advanced monitoring and therapeutics, surgical and other procedural interventions, structural heart disease, complex arrhythmias, and culturally diverse and priority populations. You will practice and exemplify leadership and teamwork skills as a cardiac nurse.

Learning outcomes

  1. Practice professionally at a minimum standard in accordance with the Practice Standards for Australian Cardiovascular Nursing.
  2. Apply advanced knowledge of pathophysiology to the assessment and management of patients with cardiovascular conditions.
  3. Interpret a range of assessment data to inform a plan of nursing care.
  4. Prioritise, implement, and evaluate person centred care and specialist nursing management for a person with cardiovascular conditions including comorbidities.
  5. Synthesise evidence-based practice to optimise cardiovascular health outcomes.
  6. Apply and evaluate safe and effective cardiovascular care to priority populations including culturally diverse populations.
  7. Assess and exemplify teamwork and leadership skills as a cardiac nurse.

Workload

24 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed study, including tutorials and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
