Overview

Through this fundamental perioperative unit, you will gain a deeper theoretical understanding of both perioperative and peri-anaesthetic nursing practice to support your clinical role and clinical skills development. You will learn the skills to safely manage risk in elective and emergency situations; how to care for diverse patient populations, and the fundamentals of clinical leadership. Commencing your Masters level of study with this unit will provide you with the skills to examine evidence-based data, and apply clinically. You will gain confidence in application of the National Safety and Quality Health Standards (NSQHS), and the Australian College of Perioperative Nurses (ACORN) Standards to your current practice. This unit will deepen your anatomical and pathophysiological knowledge, and you will learn advanced data interpretation skills, vital for prioritising and planning perioperative and peri-anaesthetic care.

Learning outcomes

  1. Examine and apply National Safety and Quality Health Standards (NSQHS), and the Australian College Of Perioperative Nurses (ACORN) Standards to perioperative nursing practice.
  2. Synthesise knowledge of anatomy and physiology to complex peri-anaesthetic and perioperative nursing practice.
  3. Implement safety and risk mitigation strategies in perioperative nursing.
  4. Examine and apply evidence-based literature to perioperative nursing practice.
  5. Interpret assessment data to prioritise and plan peri-anaesthetic and perioperative nursing care.
  6. Analyse and implement clinical leadership skills required for routine and unplanned situations in the Operating Suite.
  7. Formulate culturally safe environments in the operating suite for diverse and/or priority patient populations.

Workload

24 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self directed study, including tutorials and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
