Overview

This unit builds on NUR5710 Perioperative Nursing 1 to enable you to further develop knowledge and skills related to specific speciality areas and advanced practice roles. Surgical specialty areas include orthopaedics, neurosurgery, trauma, vascular and cardiothoracic, head and neck, ear nose and throat, endovascular, and paediatric surgery. You will be provided with opportunities to develop knowledge in complex situations drawing on advanced collaboration and communication. You will further develop your knowledge in caring for patients throughout the organ donation process and at end of life in theatre. You will be supported to gain confidence in clinical preceptorship and develop your clinical leadership as you translate your new knowledge into practical workplace change.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, to assess and manage the perioperative patient.
  2. Analyse patient needs and develop a holistic perioperative nursing care plan.
  3. Appraise and reflect on current literature to evaluate perioperative nursing practice.
  4. Apply advanced clinical knowledge and clinical decision-making skills in response to routine and unplanned clinical situations.
  5. Evaluate and reflect on interdisciplinary communication and nursing leadership in the perioperative environment.
  6. Analyse the ethical and legal issues related to the care of the perioperative patient.
  7. Evaluate perianaesthetic and perioperative risk factors, identifying strategies to ensure appropriate and professional nursing care in the specialty fields of surgery.

Workload

24 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self directed study, including tutorials and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
