Overview

This unit belongs to Theme 3: Nutrition Professional and Skills Development. This unit enables the development of two major professional skills of the Nutritionists. You will be engaged in a community nutrition project, playing a vital role in improving the health and quality of life of individuals and communities by addressing nutritional challenges and empowering individuals to make informed food choices. You will be also conduct health promotion activity and play a critical role in empowering individuals and communities to make informed decisions about their health, adopt healthy behaviours, while you create environments that support health and well-being.

Learning outcomes

  1. Assess nutritional and health-related data in the community.
  2. Integrate national and international recommendations, and guidelines on diet and physical activity into the development of nutrition program in the community.
  3. Develop and execute a health promotion program tailored to specific community groups.
  4. Apply evidence-based practice in nutrition education, behaviour and counselling to real-world scenarios.
  5. Analyse their own thoughts, actions, and experiences, leading to enhanced self-awareness and deeper understanding of the nutritional issues in the community.
  6. Interpret and communicate through oral and written form the nutritional needs across different settings in the community and health promotion.

Workload

12 hours per week of teacher-directed study as below: • 2 hours of lectures/week = 24 hrs • 2 hours of tutorials, 7 weeks = 14 hrs • 2 Problem based learning (Workshop): 4 x 3 hours/session=12 hrs • Workshop: 6 hrs/week = 72 hrs • Community Nutrition Field Visit (Applied): 24 hrs • Health Promotion (Applied): 5 hrs 12 hours per week of self-directed study.
