Overview

In this unit, you will continue developing your professional practice as a paramedic, guided by the professional standards and Code of Conduct that shape safe and ethical care. You will build on foundational patient assessment to manage common clinical presentations, applying principles of lifespan development and analysing key pathophysiological and epidemiological concepts. Simulation-based learning will strengthen your situational awareness and risk-informed decision-making. Community-based work integrated learning will provide opportunities to apply your developing knowledge and skills in real-world contexts, demonstrating safe, competent practice at an advanced beginner level while fostering strategies to support your own health and professional wellbeing.

  1. Analyse how the Paramedicine Board of Australia Professional Standards and the shared Code of Conduct guide professional practice.
  2. Apply the principles of lifespan development into paramedic practice.
  3. Analyse foundational pathophysiology and epidemiology of common health conditions and disease presentations.
  4. Evaluate and integrate person-centred care principles into patient assessment and clinical decision making.
  5. Explore situational awareness and risk informed strategies for paramedic practice.
  6. Integrate professional and inclusive communication strategies when engaging in paramedic practice.
  7. Develop strategies to maximise personal health and wellbeing while practicing as a paramedic.
  8. Demonstrate as an advanced beginner practitioner a person-centred, evidence-based approach to the clinical assessment and care of patients.
  9. Demonstrate as an advanced beginner practitioner the knowledge, skills and attributes required for safe and competent paramedic practice.

Workload

Lectures and online activities: 4 hours per week Tutorials: 2 hours per week Practicals: 3 hours per week Self directed learning: 11 Work Integrated Learning: 6 days/48 hours (AHPRA accredited and assessed by shifts rather than hours due to varying shift times) Workload: A combination of lectures, tutorials, practicals, online activities and self-directed study. Total 24hrs per week. 6 days of work integrated learning (shifts vary from 8-12 hours)
