Overview

Through supervised practice, you will have the opportunity to apply your podiatry knowledge and skills in assessment, treatment and patient education, whilst working as part of a larger health care team. You will be exposed to professional, ethical and legal aspects of podiatry care and you will have opportunities to develop technical, clinical, personal and professional skills. This unit will help you understand the role of the podiatrist as an important member of multidisciplinary care teams. You will complete a clinical placement in either an acute, subacute/ rehabilitation or community-based setting, where you will apply evidence-based practice in the decision-making process. Further to this, you will build your knowledge and experience to develop the competencies required for independent practice as a podiatrist. You will analyse patient transitions through health services and use audits to improve clinical practice.

Learning outcomes

1. Demonstrate professional behaviour in patient care and rights that is culturally sensitive and in accordance with legal requirements and the Professional Capabilities for Podiatrists;
2. Communicate appropriately and effectively across written and verbal mediums, with patients, staff, and other health care stakeholders;
3. Examine patient needs, including selection of relevant measures of health indicators and outcomes;
4. Analyse and plan appropriate patient interactions, including person-centred goal development in a variety of clinical settings;
5. Provide appropriate interventions for patients in different clinical contexts including podiatric treatment and use of pharmaceutical therapy;
6. Identify, critically appraise and apply evidence-based practice to patient care in different clinical settings and contexts.

Workload

Contact hours per semester On campus: Up to 12 hours of compulsory facilitated simulated clinical practice interspersed between off-site clinical placements. Off campus: Up to 122 hours of off-campus WIL placements supervised by clinical educators based at various placement providers. Non-contact hours per semester Up to 10 hours of self-directed study and preparation of assessment tasks Total: 144 hours per semester.
