The aim of this unit is to introduce you to the business, marketing and management principles required for the successful operation of a physiotherapy business. The concepts of business, marketing, microeconomics and accounting are introduced and applied to physiotherapy. The influence and requirements of funding models including private health insurance, Medicare, Workcover and NDIS will be analysed with respect to their impact on physiotherapy business. The clinical and operational governance structures within a range of physiotherapy settings will also be compared and the role of digital health tools and interventions analysed. This unit will also allow you to identify legal and contractual considerations of physiotherapy employment. The teaching methods for this unit include a series of lectures and podcasts by employer, industry and academic experts, followed by specific learning activities and feedback to equip you with a comprehensive overview of the non-clinical aspects to ta a physiotherapy business and management career pathway.

- Describe the ethical considerations and potential conflicts of interest that may confront physiotherapists within business
- Describe the communication skills required for the effective management of others
- Describe the role of clinical and operational governance in the prevention and minimisation of clinical risks and adverse outcomes
- Differentiate between the models of health funding in physiotherapy including WorkCover, Private Insurance, Chronic Disease Management and NDIS and analyse the impact on practice
- Describe the business and marketing skills required for physiotherapy practice
- Identify the role of digital health tools and interventions in physiotherapy
- Recognise the importance of market-driven principles to physiotherapy practice.
Workload
This is a self-paced online unit undertaken by students around their clinical placement schedules. All content is accessible at the commencement of semester. There are approximately 2-3 hours of prepared materials for each of the 10 topics including: on-demand lectures, podcasts, e-books, prescribed readings, and other learning activities. The average time required for the dedicated online tasks, private study, and preparation for assessment tasks is 12 hours per week, inclusive of a 1 hour online tutorial.
