Overview

You will build upon first year foundational knowledge of human anatomy and apply this knowledge across a range of planar radiographic images. You will learn how to identify and recognise normal radiographic appearances of important structures as represented on digital radiographic images. You will also be introduced to different imaging modalities, and learn how to recognise the anatomical representation and relationship of important body structures in multiple imaging planes.

Learning outcomes

  1. Differentiate between the bony and soft tissue elements and joints which comprise the upper and lower limbs on digital planar radiographic and computed tomography images.
  2. Name and identify the anatomical and soft tissue structures represented on digital planar radiographic images
  3. Describe and differentiate the basic computed tomography radiographic representation of the primary organs comprising cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, & reproductive systems both with and without contrast enhancement
  4. Describe and differentiate the magnetic resonance radiographic representation of commonly performed MRI regions: magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), brain & spine.
  5. Name and identify the primary anatomical structures of the head, neck and spine as represented on computed tomography images.
  6. Discriminate between the osseous, soft tissue components and primary muscles of the shoulder, hip, knee & spine on MR images.

Workload

1 hour lecture, 2 hour tutorial per week, 3 hours of teacher - directed interaction with Moodle based tasks per week. You will be expected to engage in an additional 6 hours of self-directed learning to facilitate the appropriate level of knowledge of the topics covered in the unit.
