Through completing this unit, you will develop an understanding of the scientific principles and techniques behind effective and safe computed tomography (CT) imaging. You will be introduced to the instrumentation, positioning, clinical-protocols and radiation protection principals for CT and learn how to apply these to practice in both therapy and diagnostic settings. Building on your knowledge of cross-sectional imaging in RAD2002, you will further develop your skills in anatomical and pathological identification of core body regions in CT (head/neck/chest/abdomen/pelvis).

Learning outcomes
- Describe the scientific principles underpinning modern multi-slice computed tomographic scanners;
- Articulate the technological characteristics and the relevant applications of multi-slice computed tomography medical imaging systems;
- Apply a range of radiation protection measures applicable to CT in simulated situations;
- Critically evaluate basic clinical scanning protocols, digital image processing techniques and equipment, image display and reconstruction routines used in CT in both therapy and diagnostic settings;
- Describe and interpret positioning and methods employed in CT examinations of the head/neck, chest and abdomen/pelvis in both therapy and diagnostic settings;
- Identify the key anatomical and pathological appearances in CT images of the head/neck, chest and abdomen/pelvis.
Workload
6 hours of teacher-directed study per week, including 3 hours of pre- and post-class activities via Moodle and 3 hours of interactive scheduled class time (including tutorials and workshops). 6 hours of self-directed study per week.
