Overview

In this unit, you will build on the knowledge and skills developed in Chinese Translation in Professional Settings 1 by extending your translation practice to specialised professional communication contexts. You will critically analyse authentic Chinese and English texts by considering genre, communicative purpose, audience, register, cultural context and disciplinary conventions in political, legal and technological settings. Working with authentic texts from political and public communication, legal and institutional communication, and science, technology and localisation, you will further develop skills in selecting and justifying appropriate translation strategies for specialised texts. You will also develop professional judgement through reflective translation practice, critical evaluation of translation decisions, and the appropriate use of digital translation technologies and AI in response to the terminological and disciplinary demands of specialised translation.

Learning outcomes

1. critically analyse specialised Chinese and English texts by evaluating genre, communicative purpose, audience, register, disciplinary conventions and cultural context in political, legal and technological settings;
2. apply and justify appropriate translation strategies to produce accurate and effective Chinese–English and English–Chinese translations across specialised professional communication contexts;
3. critically evaluate and justify translation decisions through reflective practice, exercising professional judgement and making appropriate use of digital translation technologies and AI in specialised translation practice.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
