Overview

This unit integrates pharmacokinetics (PK) of drugs and product development, aiming to provide a full picture of how PK evaluation may impact formulation design and manufacture for medicines. 1.Pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) You will be introduced to key techniques and concepts in the measurement, analysis and interpretation of PK/PD data for the development of pharmaceuticals. You will learn about important bioanalytical approaches required to generate PK datasets. You will receive datasets of model pharmaceuticals and learn to use PK/PD modelling and analyse these data. Based on an interpretation of the results regarding the physiological and physicochemical processes determining drug absorption, action and elimination, you will make recommendations on delivery options and dosage regimens for the model drugs. 2. Product design, protocol development, laboratory reporting and data analysis. This component of the unit will provide opportunities for you to develop your employment-relevant research, teamwork and communication skills by producing scientifically sound solutions to produce a pharmaceutical product with thorough testing, evaluation and presentation. You will also develop the critical thinking skills necessary to make professionally informed decisions about the design of a scientific investigation as well as in the interpretation and communication of results.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discuss a range of important PK processes and behaviours and commonly used models to describe these;
  2. Undertake PK and PK/PD modelling and simulations to inform clinical trial and drug development planning;
  3. Apply advanced concepts in pharmaceutics to interpret PK/PD data and improve drug delivery and dose/regimen selection;
  4. Define a research strategy to find, evaluate and organise authoritative and relevant information needed to solve the problem;
  5. Construct a precise experimental protocol to investigate selected factors' effects;
  6. Conduct experiments according to industry standards to produce and test products;
  7. Methodically and systematically evaluate and analyse data, interpret observed phenomena and relate them to the initial hypotheses raised;
  8. Communicate scientific findings and conclusions, and propose relevant solutions;
  9. Work efficiently as a team.
