Overview

The unit topics include household and consumer finance, the role of debt and credit in the economy, firm investment, and implications of financial decision making. Tools and concepts are developed to explore these topics, which include (but not limited to) causal inference in financial economics, expectations, risk preferences, and portfolio choice.

Learning outcomes

  1. understand the function of financial markets and intermediation in the modern economy
  2. understand how consumers and firms choose their portfolios and investment
  3. understand the trade-off between risk and return
  4. understand the consequences of financial decision making by firms and households at the micro and macro levels.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
