IMM3062 · Clinical and research laboratory immunology

Overview

You will learn advanced techniques used in both clinical and research immunology settings. You will design experimental protocols; appreciating the importance of experimental and quality controls in research design and linking laboratory findings with clinical problems. The unit is laboratory based, incorporating small group in-class discussions covering theoretical aspects of the content. You will choose an emerging area of research, design experiments that could investigate this research and present this in a range of research settings.

Learning outcomes

1. Perform research and diagnostic laboratory techniques, laboratory skills and calculations;
2. Implement safe and competent scientific work-practices;
3. Identify relevant questions for scientific inquiry through a written assessment and present this in a research forum;
4. Accurately record, analyse and report experimental outcomes;
5. Synthesise and present experimental findings in the context of relevant scientific literature.

Workload

• One 5-hour laboratory class • 1-2 hours of directed/self-directed pre-class preparation and • 5-6 hours of self-directed learning activities per week
