Overview

In this unit you will cultivate skills and knowledge to assist organisations in creating a successful long-term future. Drawing on theoretical and practical knowledge, you will have opportunity to acquire the foundations of strategic management. You will be supported as you apply your knowledge and judgement to identify strategic issues, evaluate options and recommend optimal strategies. As you apply your analytical, critical and creative thinking skills, you will be given opportunity for reflection on the dynamic nature of contemporary strategic management.

Learning outcomes

  1. critically analyse the internal (such as capabilities, knowledge or organisational culture) and external (national and global) environments of organisations to identify and understand strategic issues
  2. select and apply appropriate theoretical and practical knowledge as the basis for evaluating and recommending well-reasoned strategic options
  3. demonstrate analytical, critical and creative skills in the use of strategic management concepts and tools
  4. exhibit capacity for self-directed learning, reflection and generating insights when researching and exploring aspects of strategic management
  5. communicate effectively and convincingly, either in groups or individually, insights from strategic analysis
  6. demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
