Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
In this unit, you will be introduced to composite lamina and composite laminates, as well as the mechanical performance of composite structures. You will learn methods for hygrothermal strain and hygrothermal stress analysis of composite structures, and examine failure theories for a composite lamina, micromechanical analysis of a composite lamina, classical lamination theory for composite laminates, and failure analysis of composite laminates. You will then apply these techniques to the intelligent design of tailored composite laminates with specific structural properties.

Requisites
Learning outcomes
- Identify, describe and evaluate the properties of fibre reinforcements, polymer matrix materials and commercial composites.
- Formulate a model to present the mechanical properties of different combinations and orientations of lamina and laminates.
- Determine the strength and stiffness of composite laminate structures.
- Design composite laminates to meet strength, stiffness and cost requirements for aerospace applications.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
