This unit builds on foundation anatomy and physiology units BMA1901 and BMA1902 and aims to provide you with an understanding of functional anatomy and pathophysiology to inform the practice of Occupational Therapy. The unit provides advanced study of functional musculoskeletal anatomy, functional brain and spinal cord anatomy. The unit includes an introduction to neurochemistry and pharmacology and the pathophysiology of cerebrovascular accidents and traumatic brain, spinal and nerve injury. The function of the central nervous system is studied in relation to cognition and behaviour, including age-related changes, memory, altered states such as sleep, and the neurobiology of mental illness, in particular, autism and schizophrenia. You will learn through lectures and workshops with an emphasis on case-cased learning. Assessment includes a written and practical exam, peer-review and quizzes.

Learning outcomes
- Describe the musculoskeletal anatomy related to movement and apply anatomical principles to determine function and common pathology
- Explain the functions and structure of the nervous system in relation to cognition, affect, memory formation and motor control.
- Discuss the pathophysiology and clinical consequences of stroke and traumatic brain, spinal and nerve injury;
- Evaluate the basic neurochemistry, use and action of different classes of psychoactive drugs and explain the potential issues relating to occupational therapy.
- Explain the mechanisms and consequences of mental/psychosocial, physical and social capacities of humans across the lifespan.
- Evaluate body functions, body structures and related clinical conditions and the applications to occupational performance challenges for clients of occupational therapy.
Workload
