Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
In this unit you will engage with notions of change as a key consideration for spatial practice. Two fundamental modules will be explored: the development of design as a process of discovery, connecting introductory research concepts; and the assembly of materials in spatial practice. In the first module you will focus on the temporal aspects of space, and the connection of design ideas, materials, and experiences to change and transformation. In the second module services within inhabited environments will be introduced, and explored by you through focused observation and project work.

Requisites
corequisite
- OHS1000 — Introduction to art and design health and safety
Learning outcomes
- Explain key temporal concepts and their relevance to spatial design, and identify appropriate materials and their structural qualities to support design intentions;
- Apply exploratory strategies within an iterative design process, using time-based representation techniques to develop and communicate design schemes;
- Integrate temporal elements, material qualities, and user experience through iterative experimentation, acting on feedback to develop cohesive and context-sensitive design outcomes;
- Collaborate in diverse teams by exchanging ideas and feedback with peers and considering stakeholder perspectives, while effectively presenting outcomes in a clear and engaging manner;
- Examine, reflect and respond to aesthetic, functional, sustainable, and programmatic aspects in the development of a design proposal;
- Document and reflect on each stage of the design proposal process, incorporating diverse media and iterative practices to enhance design development and engage in self-reflection to deepen your understanding of your design practice.
