This unit deepens your understanding of the relationship between design, production, and manufacturing processes. Through hands-on studio explorations, you will investigate how production methods and material choices impact the design of an object, building an appreciation for the interdependence of form, function, and manufacture. Key topics include various manufacturing techniques, the implications of materiality on design outcomes, and the balance between rational and creative approaches in industrial design practice. You will be encouraged to take an experimental approach to problem-solving, applying theoretical insights to practical challenges. Project work will be documented in a production-ready folio, showcasing your process and technical considerations. Where applicable, final design proposals will be presented as detailed models or prototypes, demonstrating your ability to translate conceptual ideas into tangible solutions.

Learning outcomes
- Appreciate the practical and theoretical nature of industrial design, understanding core principles of manufacturing techniques and material properties, evaluating their impact on design and production outcomes;
- Design objects to specific physical and functional criteria through iterative prototyping and feedback, by leveraging industrial production techniques to explore material manipulation and scalability;
- Integrate principles of materiality, manufacturing processes, and design constraints to create cohesive solutions that balance functionality and aesthetics, accounting for the implications of different material choices and production techniques on the sustainability and usability of designs;
- Reflect on the impact of design decisions on users, society, and the environment, engaging in collaborative processes and integrating peer and tutor feedback to strengthen outcomes and foster shared responsibility;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the social and environmental responsibilities of a designer by prioritising sustainable and ethical design practices;
- Cultivate self-directed learning skills by identifying areas for personal and professional growth through feedback integration and exploration of new production techniques and design methodologies.
