Overview

This unit enables you to focus on the acquisition and synthesis of advanced nursing knowledge and skills related to the initial aspect of the consultation sequence - specifically, advanced history taking, advanced health assessment, the formulation of a working diagnosis and differentials, and the ordering and interpretation of diagnostic tests. Additionally, you will analyse the impact of social determinants of health on history taking and health assessment and how these factors influence your diagnostic reasoning.

Learning outcomes

  1. Articulate an advanced holistic health assessment of the patient in a succinct and structured manner.
  2. Formulate clinical impressions by​ systematically synthesising patient history, health assessment and diagnostic tests.
  3. Analyse the context of social determinants of health on history taking, health assessment and how these impact upon diagnostic reasoning.
  4. Interpret and evaluate clinical assessment findings to inform relevant investigative options.
  5. Create and conduct an educational session in the advanced practice role.

Workload

24 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including lectures, tutorials, online activities and supernumerary integrated professional practice (SIPP). Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
