Overview

This unit introduces you to the business, marketing and management principles required for the successful operation of an allied health business. The concepts of microeconomics and entrepreneurship are introduced and applied to healthcare professionals. The influence and requirements of funding models including private health insurance, Medicare, TAC, Workcover, DVA and NDIS will be analysed with respect to their impact on a business. The clinical and operational governance structures within a range of health care settings will also be compared. This unit will also allow you to consolidate context-specific pre-employment information and processes required for employment including legal and contractual considerations.

Learning outcomes

  1. Analyse the ethical considerations and potential conflicts of interest that may confront allied healthcare professionals within business.
  2. Critically reflect upon own and observed communication skills required for effective management of others.
  3. Discuss the role of clinical and operational governance in the prevention and minimisation of clinical risks and adverse outcomes.
  4. Differentiate between the models of health funding in allied health including WorkCover, Private Insurance, Chronic Disease Management and NDIS and analyse the impact on practice.
  5. Apply the business and marketing skills including digital health tools and interventions required for allied health practice.
  6. Explore the importance of market-driven principles to allied health practice.

Workload

This is a self-paced online unit undertaken by you around your clinical placement schedules. All content is accessible at the commencement of the semester. There are approximately 2-3 hours of prepared materials for each of the 10 topics including on-demand lectures, podcasts, e-books, prescribed readings, and other learning activities. The average time required for the dedicated online tasks, private study, and preparation for assessment tasks is 12 hours per week, inclusive of a 1 hour online tutorial.
