PTY5302 · Applied research in physiotherapy

Overview

This unit allows you the opportunity to select and conduct an independent physiotherapy research project over a 12-month period under academic supervision. Building on previous knowledge of ethical research conduct, and exposure to a range of clinical practice challenges in years one and two of the course, you will be supported to define their research question, determine research method, data collection and analysis. Dissemination of research findings will include both an oral and written report. You will will be supported by an academic research supervisor relevant to their area of study for the duration of the research project.

The Handbook does not list a final examination among the assessment items. That is not a guarantee there is none.

All assessment tasks in this unit are competency hurdles. One attempt is permitted. Failure of any hurdle assessment task may result in failure of the unit.Students must actively participate in a minimum of 80% of related scheduled activities.

3. Generate questions/ aims/ hypotheses based on experience, expertise and literature.
4. Design and develop a clinically relevant research protocol.
5. Devise appropriate research methods and collect and record data.
6. Seek and analyse data to fill student-identified gaps or extend knowledge.
7. Deliver a verbal presentation and provide constructive peer feedback in an inter-professional seminar setting.
8. Apply evidence-based practice in a range of models of patient care.

Workload

On-campus: Fortnightly supervisor/student meetings (one-hour duration) are expected throughout the year, however there is the option for these meetings to be conducted face to face or via video conferencing. You are also required to participate in a one-week block of campus-based study that will include a one-day research symposium (6-8 hours) at the completion of this unit. Off-campus: This unit is predominantly completed off-campus, although the location of data collection will impact on location of work. An average of 12 hours of assisted and/or independent work per week is expected over each semester.
